According to legend, after defeating the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas felt guilty about killing their own brothers and sought Lord Shiva's blessing for redemption. He evaded them repeatedly and sought refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. When he realized he was being followed, he dove into the ground, leaving his hump visible. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared in four other locations and are worshipped as his manifestations.
